Precision Gear Honing for Quieter High-Speed Gears
In addition to gear grinding, Systrand also has the experience to hard finish gears through power honing and bore honing. Gear honing can prove vital to removing deformations from heat treating. It also plays an important role in reducing NVH (noise, vibration, and harshness) levels by eliminating ripples on the surface of the gear teeth, which can lead to “ghost order” noise in EV powertrains.
Precision power honing offers superior surface finishes and precise gear geometry, which means higher performance drivelines. But it takes more than just precision. Good advanced gear manufacturing arises from gear honing and cutting experience, and having processes in place so that you can build on that experience.
At Systrand, we’ve embraced a structured approach to gear manufacturing processes. This approach is grounded in data analysis, with continuous monitoring in place, so that we can confirm that our gear honing process is a precise and repeatable approach to pre- or post-heat treat finishing of gear teeth. Our gear honing process can meet stringent specifications and critical dimensional/surface finish requirements, and is good for both low- and high-volume runs.
Optimizing Gears for Manufacturability
Gear designers are not gear manufacturers—and shouldn’t have to be. You set the specification. We will work with you to make it a reality.
Since 1982, Systrand has specialized in precision machining. During that period, high-performance gears became increasingly important to the automotive industry—and to us. For the last decade we’ve lived and breathed the NVH standards and requirements.
As customer demands have become more challenging—tighter tolerances, higher precision, lower NVH, finer surface finish—we’ve developed the solutions and systems vital to meeting and exceeding their expectations. Systrand was among the first U.S. manufacturers to supply high-precision hybrid and electric vehicle (HEV/EV) gears.
Today, we have more than one million of these gears, shafts, and other components in the field. More importantly, we have the tools and processes in place to ensure that our gears perform to ever higher standards. Those processes include an advanced 100% noise signature analysis on all NVH critical components, capable of isolating extremely subtle sources of unwanted vibration.
Our Commitment to Quality
“Quality” isn’t just something for the Quality Department to worry about. It’s a commitment threaded through every office and workstation. At Systrand, we are a tier 1 supplier with IATF 16949 and ISO 14001 certifications. Our quality systems, processes, and entire organization are committed to ensuring quality for our customers.
Over four decades, we’ve invested and reinvested in the tools and talent that are vital to our customers’ success. That includes a world class operating system of monitored performance and a structured approach to problem solving proven to ensure reliable manufacturing.
These are metrics/results driven systems, built on Lean Manufacturing principles and Six Sigma methodology, and take into account activity-based costing and overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) while maintaining low- to zero PPM. Those systems form a foundation from which we can pursue continuous improvements and cost savings for our customers.
